PNG files are raster image files somewhat similar to GIF files in that they both use lossless compression and contain a bitmap of indexed colors. Unlike GIF files, there are no copyright limitations that pertain to the PNG format. Characteristics of PNG files include increased color support and an 8-bit transparency channel to allow for gradient blending -- opaque to transparent. The files have become increasingly common in business environments because nearly all modern computers can open them and because they are small files that can be stored or transmitted easily.
1.
Browse your computer until you find the PNG file you wish to read.
2.Right-click the image and select 'Open With.' In Mac OSX, press 'Ctrl' and click on the PNG and choose 'Open With.'
3.In Windows 7, choose 'Paint' from the menu that appears. In Mac OSX, select 'Preview' from the menu that appears. Your PNG file will open with the program you've chosen.
4.Save any changes you make to your image, such as resizing or cropping, before exiting the software.

Preview is a tool that most Mac users use every day. I use it for viewing files, playing videos, and viewing images. I even use it for annotating images and making minor image edits.
One of the primary ways that I use Preview with images is when I need to crop an image to only display a specific portion. You could choose to copy and paste the portion of the image that you wish to save to a new photo, but there’s extra steps involved there that aren’t necessary.
Instead, wouldn’t it be better if you could crop an image using a handy keyboard shortcut? In this brief tutorial, I’ll show you how.
How to crop images with Preview
Step 1: Open the image that you wish to crop in Preview
Step 2: Use your mouse or trackpad to select the portion of the image that you want to keep
Step 3: Press ⌘+K to crop the image (You can also use Tools → Crop in the menu bar)
It’s really that simple. There’s no need to create a brand new file; just crop the original file and you’re done.
